Donations sought for distribution of foodstuffs to community members affected by coronavirus

There are many people who have been cut off from their jobs and sources of income due to the community quarantine measures that have been issued due to the spread of the coronavirus. In the poorest areas of the Philippines, where many families earn a day’s work to earn a living, many people are living in fear of not knowing what to do with their food tomorrow.

Salt Payatas will be distributing foodstuffs to such people. We would like to ask for your support in this effort. For a donation of 1,000 yen, we can provide foodstuffs for 3-5 days.

Below is a brief introduction of the situation in Payatas and Kasigrahan in the Philippines and what we have done so far.

The Situation in the Philippines

A presidential “public health emergency” was declared in the Philippines in response to the spread of the coronavirus. This was followed by the issuance of a memorandum imposing an “Enhanced Community Quarantine” for the entire Luzon region from 17 March – 13 April.

A summary of this community quarantine is as follows.

The following measures are in place:
– Suspension of school classes and activities
– Strict home quarantine measures in all households (restrictions on movement except to obtain essential items)
– Restrictions on private activities other than those in essential sectors, such as those involved in the production of food and medicine
– Suspension of public transportation
– Restrictions on land, domestic vessels and domestic air traffic *For more information, click here:.

The situation in Payatas and Kasiglahan and what we are doing

In areas like Payatas Kasiglahan, which we support, many of the men earn their livelihoods by working as transportation drivers or as day laborers doing construction work in Manila. These people have been abruptly cut off from their source of income due to this community segregation.

Although the Philippine government has come up with measures to assist these people, such as distributing foodstuffs and cash transfers through the local government, the amount of foodstuffs provided is not sufficient and the distribution of foodstuffs has been delayed.

In response to this situation, Salt Payatas has been distributing foodstuffs to a total of 200 families in the Payatas and Kasiglahan areas since March 23, about a week after the community quarantine began.

<The contents of the foodstuff (about 1,000 yen worth)>
Rice 5kg
Instant Noodle 5 Pack
2 cans of meat
Soup stock 1 pack
Coffee and MILO stock (6 packs)

This is enough food for about 3 to 5 days. When distributing the food, we observe the following points to prevent coronavirus infection.

・We manage the distribution time and do not allow too many people to gather at the library at the same time.
・Maintain a social distance of at least 2m
・Hand food poisoning and wearing a mask

We thought that with our temporary support and the support of the government, we would be able to protect the lives of the local people. However, in April and May, the situation is still as severe as ever and many people are still struggling to buy food to eat. As there is a limit to what we can do with our own financial resources, we are asking for your support as well.
